An idea years in the making has come to fruition at Sigourney High School with Savage Sips, a student-run coffee shop.
Juniors Hannah Hanselman, Taylor Rozenboom, and Gabriella Dehne, and sophomore Colt Reed have spearheaded the endeavor. Last year, the four helped lay the groundwork with fellow students in Sigourney business teacher Shannon Greiner’s class, researching, finding recipes and contacting vendors. What started in the concession stand has since moved into their own room within the school thanks to hard work from the students and assistance from the custodial staff.
This opportunity has allowed Savage students to gain real-world experience, including handling money, interacting with people face-to-face, and maintaining an inventory. Greiner echoed to KCII the benefits from having Savage Sips in the building. “Customer service, organization, just your everyday life skills”.
With the advantages of this student-run business evident, Dehne tells KCII that Savage Sips has been welcomed by staff and students alike. “Everyone at the school loves this, and it’s just a good thing to have at our school.”
Savage Sips is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:45-8:45 a.m. Updates on the coffee shop can be followed on Instagram at savage.sips2, TikTok at savage.sips, or through email at savage.sips@gmail.com.
