Sigourney-Keota football has once again risen to the top ranks of Class 1A teams in southeast Iowa, and they’ll move one step closer towards winning another district championship if they can defeat Pella Christian tonight in a showdown for first place in District 6.

After losing their season opener, the Cobras have won four straight, and while they didn’t appear in the first-ever state rankings from the Iowa High School Athletics Association, they were ninth in the last Associated Press poll.

SK’s offense is powered by a dominant run game, averaging over 311 yards per game on the ground. Senior Kale Clarahan’s 623 yards and eight touchdowns leads the way for a diverse rushing attack.

But Sigourney-Keota is an equally impressive defensive team, allowing just over 16 points per game. Senior Jake Moore leads the team with 24-and-a-half total tackles, while junior Ashton Schwab has teamed with seniors Evan Vittetoe, Hunter Sieren and Aiden McGuire to combine for 21 tackles for loss and 7 sacks.

If the Cobras are going to move to 3-0 in district play, they’ll need to get a third consecutive victory over Pella Christian, who debuted at number eight in the IHSAA rankings. Senior Benny Schirz leads the 4-1 Eagles with 457 yards and seven touchdowns running the ball, while junior Cooper Spronk has 452 total yards from scrimmage.

Sigourney-Keota’s wins over Pella Christian each of the last two seasons have only been by a combined nine points. The Cobras collide with the Eagles starting this evening at 7 in the Snake Pit.
