U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley and fellow Finance Committee colleagues have investigated the organ donation system for potential self-dealing and financial conflicts of interest. Here are some of his thoughts, “First of all, it led to legislation that the President of the United States signed. I started this, exposing things that were wrong in human transplant donations. And there’s been people that have studied it, since I opened up this discussion. It said perhaps as many as one hundred thousand people have died because they didn’t get their organ transplant on time. So we have found that organizations running it operate like a monopoly, they don’t oversee the contracts that they have with the people that actually procure the donations for transplant. And so we passed legislation that hopefully corrects all these wrongs, and I thank the President for signing that bill.” Oversight efforts notched a victory earlier this summer when Congress passed legislation to reform the management of the organ system and improve patients’ access to lifesaving organ donations. The bill now awaits the president’s signature.
