The City of Sigourney continues to weigh its options as the search for a new police chief is ongoing.

At the moment, Sigourney has a 28E agreement with the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office, however this presents challenges for officers who already have a large area to cover. Having gone without a police chief for approximately two years, the ultimate goal is to have more coverage within the city, and build a department.

This summer, the Sigourney City Council considered such options as sharing a department with the City of Keota or hiring an individual from University Heights before retirement. This could help establish a stable law enforcement presence before the police chief position is passed down to another officer.

At the beginning of the year, Sigourney hired an ordinance officer, which has since led to the clean-up of more than 50 residences in town. Finding a police chief, however, is still a top objective. To view an application for the City of Sigourney Police Chief position, click here
