Recently, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley introduced a resolution designating 2024 as the Year of Democracy. Here is his reasoning behind this resolution, “In 1787, fifty-six people put their names on the Constitution, and now the Constitution is now the law of the land in the United States. And we have the greatest Democracy that humankind of six thousand years has ever known. And we want to celebrate that and this resolution is to remind people that they are living in the greatest Democracy that people have ever known. And we want to preserve it and we want to strengthen it.” Lawmakers successfully led an effort to mark September of last year as National Democracy Month. Dedicating a whole year to democracy further emphasizes the resolution’s purpose: to urge Americans to reflect on the ways in which the U.S. governing system helps encourage freedom and stability nationwide and around the globe.
