The Columbus Wildcat girls’ cross country team put together a great showing in their home meet, as Columbus was second in team scoring at the Mike Jay Invitational Tuesday at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Columbus Junction. Freshman Iris Garza once again led the way for the Wildcats, finishing third in a time of 21 minutes 18 seconds.

Junior Ariana Vergara also ran a top-10 time of 23 minutes 11 seconds to finish ninth, while the sophomore class put together a strong effort for Columbus, with Isabel Rendon finishing 12th; Naveiah Garza taking 14th; and Frannie Sosa rounding out the top 20.

Lone Tree junior Vivian Zaruba had a top-10 time by crossing the finish line in 23:06 to earn eighth place, while Lions sophomore Jasmine Nino was 19th. Senior Afton Wilkerson and sophomore Jana Isanta Vila were 18th and 19th, respectively, for Winfield-Mount Union, while Justine Lynn led WACO by finishing 21st and Halle Hazelett was 23rd for Highland.

On the boys’ side, the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves were second in the team standings, led by junior Kohlby Newsom finishing third individually in 17 minutes 34 seconds. Senior Gabriel Hemsworth was also seventh in 18:07 for WMU, while sophomore Bowen Thomson was 14th and senior Ty Scorpil was 15th.

Columbus was led in the home meet by freshman Cade Storm, who clocked in at 18:32 to finish ninth. Wildcat senior Ian Estudillo rounded out the top 10 four seconds later, while junior Bryan Tlatenchi was 19th. WACO was led by junior Keriran Luitjens finishing 20th, while freshman Brock Nebergall had the best time for Lone Tree in 23rd.
