A vehicle collision in the 2200 block of Black Diamond Road SW in rural Johnson County claimed the life of an Iowa City woman.

At approximately 12:38 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the two-vehicle incident. According to the crash report, 74-year-old Cynthia Asmussen, was traveling west in a Ford Escape when she crossed the center line around a right-hand curve. The vehicle struck a Mack dump truck head-on.

The driver of the truck, 39-year-old Benjamin Burton, of Grundy Center sustained minor injuries, while Asmussen died at the scene. While responding to the scene, a Johnson County Deputy was involved in a single-vehicle crash at Eagle Avenue and Rohret Road SW in rural Johnson County. The deputy was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Both incidents remain under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
