The Washington Demons finished off their best volleyball season in almost two decades by defeating the Columbus Wildcats in four sets Thursday on Senior Night. Columbus won a tight first set 30-28, but Washington responded by cruising through the next three frames 25-14, 25-12 and 25-19.
Demon outside hitter Leighton Messinger led the team with 26 kills and 16 digs and added two serving aces and a blocked shot. Fellow sophomore hitter Taylor Miksch had 10 kills, eight digs and a block, while junior Ella Greiner finished with nine kills, two aces and 12 digs.
Junior setter Lauren Hinrichsen finished with 22 assists, three aces and 11 digs to help Washington conclude the regular season with a record of 17-17, their most wins since at least 2007. Columbus falls to 8-17. While the Wildcats will face Alburnett in the first round of the Class 2A Region 7 playoffs on Monday, the Demons are off until Tuesday when they travel to take on Davenport Assumption in the 3A Region 8 quarterfinals.
