Iowans have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fall colors this week into next, with many areas experiencing their peak viewing.
Fall colors have reached their peak in northeast Iowa, with recent cooler weather leading to some vibrant colors. All species are changing except for oak trees that typically change color later.
In central Iowa, hard maples and hickory are at peak color, with the overall landscape reaching peak fall color this weekend. Some cottonwood, elm, and hackberry are still yellow, as Virginia creeper vines are bright red and crimson. Oaks are just barely starting to turn from green to red.
Finally in southeast Iowa, peak viewing has been estimated to begin today into the weekend. Yellows and browns can be seen in walnut, elm, hickory, and cottonwood, with some already starting to lose their leaves. Reds are visible in poison ivy, sumac, and Virginia creeper. Scattered white ash are showing purple, while maples are turning red, yellow and orange. Oaks are still mostly green.
