The Kalona City of Council met in regular session on Monday.

The Council first heard from Washington County Patrol Supervisor Lieutenant Chad Ellis, who provided the police report. Eighty-nine calls were received in the month of September, compared to 85 last year, while 42 traffic stops during the month surpasses the 25 last year.

In new business, the Council discussed hosting a Gravel Series Bike Race in Kalona on May 4, 2024. The race, which anticipates approximately 200 bikers would travel through Frytown and Sharon Center, before returning back to Kalona. This received no opposition from the Council. They also considered submitting a Host Town Application for RAGBRAI 2024, however with the general consensus was to decline if offered with the construction underway at Mid-Prairie Schools.

A Resolution was approved to waive the right to review a Washington County parcel split within two miles of city limits. City Administrator, Ryan Schlabaugh, explains, “Steve and Jerilyn Rich have 13.9 acres. They would like to parcel off 10 acres to sell and 3.9 acres that they would add to their existing property at a future date. It’s gone through the County, the County’s sent it to us. It’s passed everything there.”

The Council discussed Kalona resident membership rates for 2024 at the YMCA, but no action was taken. Finally, a Class C Retail Alcohol License and Special Class A Beer Permit were approved for Tequila Grill.

The Kalona City Council’s next meeting will be held on Monday, November 6.
