The Sigourney Savages are looking to extend a strong volleyball season when they face BCLUW tonight in the Class 1A Region 5 semifinals. Sigourney is 17-8 and was the runner-up in their division of the South Iowa Cedar Leage, with postseason victories over Montezuma in straight sets and Belle Plaine in four frames.
Sigourney has been led by a strong core of veteran players. Senior outside hitter Amiya Smallwood has a team-high 181 kills as well as 31 serving aces and 251 digs, while junior Josephine Moore leads the squad with 264 digs and has compiled 113 kills and 27 aces.
A deep group of middle blockers has made the Savages an intimidating team at the net. Junior Reagan Clarahan has 131 kills and 50 blocked shots alone, while senior Emma Hammes and junior McKinley Chittick have combined for another 128 kills and 45 blocks.
Senior Ava Fineran has been the chief setter, handing out 334 assists to go with 18 aces and 95 digs, while junior Taylor Rozenboom has done similar good work with 191 assists, 16 aces and 101 digs.
Sigourney will be facing a BCLUW team that is 32-10 and ranked fourth in the state according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Six different Comet players have posted over 140 kills this season. The Savages will have first serve in the region semifinals this evening at 7 from Conrad.
