The high school football playoffs roll on tonight, and the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves are hoping their undefeated season will do the same as WMU prepares to host Moravia in the second round of the 8-man postseason this evening in a game you can hear on KCII.

The number-one-ranked Wolves have been dominant in this 9-0 season, winning by an average of almost 50 points per game. All-state senior Cam Buffington has been the team’s well-rounded superstar. The future Iowa Hawkeye leads the offense in both rushing and receiving by piling up almost 1,700 yards from scrimmage and 28 total touchdowns, but Buffington also has team highs of 83 total tackles and 15 tackles for loss on defense.

But plenty of other stars have emerged for Winfield-Mount Union. Running back Cole Miks is averaging over nine yards per carry while rushing for 13 TDs, and fellow seniors Abram Edwards and Carter Loyd have combined to catch 25 passes for 464 yards and eight scores.

On defense, Edwards has been a terror to opposing teams, racking up 12-and-a-half tackles for loss and six-and-a-half sacks. Junior Cooper Buffington has also been a force on the defensive line with 14 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Wolves head coach Scott McCarty tells KCII Sports that, despite his team’s high-scoring ways, the defense is what sets it apart.

“We start with the defense,” McCarty says. “We like to start on defense in games, just because I think that sets the tone. All those guys play their spots very, very well. They don’t try to do too much. They just do what they do at a really high level.”

WMU will be matched up against a Moravia team that is 8-2 this season. Senior Jackson McDaniel is another all-around talent, leading the team in tackles and receiving yards and having the second-most rushing yards on the team. Quarterback Shane Helmick has also been dangerous, passing for over 1,600 yards and 31 touchdowns to help the Mohawks score 51 points a game.

Winfield-Mount Union has won a regular-season game against Moravia each of the last two years. The Wolves try to get past the Mohawks and into the 8-man state quarterfinals, and you can hear all the action tonight on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com starting with pregame at 6:30.
