Four area runners took the course Friday in Fort Dodge for the Class 1A State Cross Country Championships at Kennedy Park.

The local quartet was led by Hillcrest Academy’s Marie Yoder. The freshman finished in 13th place with a time of 19:41. The finish earned her an All-State medal and set a new Raven girl’s school record.

Another area freshman girl had a tremendous showing in Fort Dodge. Columbus Wildcat Iris Garza was 23rd in 20:11.

In the boys race, Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kohlby Newsom set the local pace, the junior took 19th in 16:54. Senior Wildcat Damian Vergara wrapped up his Columbus cross country career in 102nd in 18:33.
