The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves have put together one of the finest football seasons in school history, and they can add a rendezvous with the destination every team in the state is chasing to their impressive resume, as WMU can punch a ticket to the UNI-Dome when the top-ranked Wolves battle number-seven Don Bosco in the 8-man state quarterfinals tonight on KCII.

Winfield-Mount Union’s undefeated season has been one of dominance, winning by an average of 47 points per game. All-state senior Cam Buffington continues to be an all-around force, rushing for 150 yards and four touchdowns in the second-round win over Moravia last week to push his season totals to over 1,800 yards from scrimmage and 32 total TDs.

Buffington has also been a force of nature on defense, piling up team highs of 89 tackles and 16 tackles for loss. Fellow senior Abram Edwards has saved some of his best football for the postseason, racking up three-and-a-half sacks on defense last week to raise his season numbers to 18 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.

And whether it’s Edwards and Cooper Buffington combining for 18 sacks to pressure quarterbacks or the big plays on offense from Edwards, running back Cole Milks and wide receiver Carter Loyd, WMU head coach Scott McCarty tells KCII Sports he has a complete team that has been hungry for this moment.

“They had all offseason to prepare themselves physically for this,” McCarty says, “and then, weekly, our mental and physical preparation for every game has been really, really awesome this year. The kids have had a goal in mind, and they’ve done a really nice job of preparing for it.”

The Wolves will face their toughest test of the season when they head to Gilbertville to face perennial powerhouse Don Bosco. The Dons are 9-1 and lean on a stout defense of their own, giving up only 13-and-a-half points per game. Quarterback Kaiden Knaack has also been explosive running the ball, rolling up nearly 1,600 yards and 32 scores on the ground.

Winfield-Mount Union fell at Don Bosco 48-18 in the first round of the playoffs last year. If the Wolves flip the script this time, they will earn their first trip to the state semifinals since 1999. It’s WMU at Don Bosco for a trip to the Dome, and you can hear all the action this evening on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com starting with pregame at 6:30.
