A Winfield-Mt. Union football season that won’t soon be forgotten came to a close on Wednesday morning, as the Wolves fell to Bishop Garrigan 34-20 in the eight-man state semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

While dreams of a state championship fell short for WMU, the year on the gridiron was filled with plenty of highs, along with team and individual achievements. The Wolves captured a district championship and perfect regular season, both the first for the program since 2015. They carried that success into the postseason, knocking-off three straight opponents on their way to the UNI-Dome. The last time Winfield-Mt. Union football won their way to Cedar Falls in 1999, many parents of current players were walking the same halls as students themselves.

On an individual level, the accolades were just as substantial. Scott McCarty was named Coach of the Year for District 6, as he led a team with nine player selections. They were Defensive MVP Cam Buffington, Lineman MVP Cooper Buffington, quarterback Jake Edwards, wide receiver Carter Loyd, offensive lineman Kael Johnson, defensive lineman Abram Edwards, defensive back Cole Milks, and utility player Eli Miller, while Grant Anderson earned a second team nod for offensive line.

As they close the book on an outstanding season, and look ahead to 2024, the Wolves bid farewell to their seniors, Loyd, Johnson, Miller, Milks, Jarit Tapia, Cam Buffington, and Abram Edwards.
