The Highland Huskies have high hopes for a new girls’ basketball season, having won double-digit games in all but two seasons since 2007. And, with some new faces leading the way, head coach Jody Fink believes he has a team that can improve on last year’s 8-8 record in conference play and an overall mark of 10-13.
One of the returners is all-conference forward Sarah Burton. The senior was a dominant player last season, averaging almost 16-and-a-half points, 12.5 rebounds and four steals per game while shooting over 53 percent from the field.
Junior Katie Herrig posted almost four points and four rebounds per contest last season and will be called on to play a bigger part this year, along with seniors like Kylie Allen, Kerra Longbine, Kelsi Cerny and Stella Slaymaker. Highland opens the new girls’ basketball season by facing Keota tomorrow and taking on Iowa Valley Saturday as they host the annual Four Corners Shootout in Riverside.
