Two local teams saw live scrimmage action Monday at the Hillcrest Academy boys basketball jamboree at Hillcrest Union in Kalona. The WACO Warriors faced the Benton Bobcats early in the night. The Warriors pinned the ‘Cats down with a 13-0 run that spanned the first five minutes of action and never looked back en route to a 41-17 victory. The Warriors led 15-7 after one, and strung together 16 straight points in the second period. WACO shot a sizzling 50% from the floor, went nine of 15 at the line and committed only four turnovers. The Warrior defense was stifling, forcing 15 Benton turnovers and holding the Bobcats to a chilly 21% shooting. Hunter Hughes led the Warrior attack with 16 points including four threes. Clayton Miller had five rebounds and Isaac Rich five assists. The Warriors open the season Monday against Holy Trinity.

The home Ravens fell in their scrimmage 46-16 against City High. The Little Hawks got out fast, leading 30-6 after the first frame, but Hillcrest adjusted at the quarter break to win the second period 16-10. Seth Ours had the top total for the Ravens, putting up nine points, four different Hillcrest sharp shooters knocked down a three. The Ravens get their season started Tuesday when they host Highland.
