The new Area Game of the Week broadcast season gets underway tonight live on the KCII3 Stream with a rivalry matchup when the Sigourney Savages host the Keota Eagles in a South Iowa Cedar League hoops doubleheader. The Savage boys were 13-10 a season ago, and finishing 9-7 second place in the SICL East. Sigourney put up 51 points per game last year and gave up 54 per night, shooting 35% from the floor, 26% from deep and 49% at the line to go with 33 boards, 12 assists, eight steals and 15 turnovers per game. The Savages return Issac Bruns who led the team last year with 13 points, nine boards, three assists and two steals per game. Sigourney dropped a jamboree scrimmage at Mid-Prairie to Central Lee last week 28-14, despite four points each from Bruns, Ike Molyneux and Brayden Wood.
The Keota Eagle boys were 21-4 last season, 14-2 champs of the SICL East. Keota scored 66 per game, giving up just 48 while shooting 44% from the floor, 28% from downtown and 61% at the stripe with 38 boards, 16 assists, 11 steals and 13 turnovers per game. The Eagles are looking to make noise again this season, as they return their top four scorers and defenders, top three assisters and top two rebounders. As juniors, Sawyer Stout averaged a team best 18 points per game, Cole Kindred 12 points and five assists per night and Evan Vittetoe 12 points and eight boards per game. The Eagles won the two matchups between these schools last year by 69-41 and 67-55 scores. They have won nine of the last 10 in the series.
On the girls side, Sigourney is off to a 1-0 start after a 56-35 win at Albia a week ago. The Savages led 25-0 after one quarter and rolled to the win. A quartet got to double figures for the Savages led by Carly Goodwin’s 16 points, Ava Fisch added 14, Erin Dawson 12 and Josephine Moore went double double with 10 points and 10 boards. The Savages hit eight threes and won the battle on the glass by seven. They shot 40% from the floor and from three point range.
Keota is 0-2 so far, with early season losses to Lone Tree and Highland. The Huskies beat the Eagles 51-26 and the Lady Lions scored a 59-27 win. The Eagles are averaging 27 points per game and giving up 55, shooting 21% from the floor, 27% from three and 32% at the line, to go with 26 boards, eight assists, seven steals and 28 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Kennedy Jackson nine points per game, Grace Conger at five boards and four assists and Kimberly Clarahan with three steals per night. The Savages won both meetings between these schools a year ago by 51-29 and 45-32 scores. Sigourney has taken 18 straight in the series with the Eagle’s last win coming in 2014.
