The Columbus Wildcats suffered their first loss of the girls’ basketball season last night, falling 48-44 in an overtime thriller at North Cedar. Columbus was able to break up a game that was tied at eight at the end of the first quarter and grabbed a 19-16 lead going into halftime, but North Cedar rallied to take a one-point lead heading into the final period. While the Wildcats forced an extra five minutes, the Knights ultimately came out on top.
Point guard Ariana Vergara led Columbus with 16 points scored and hit a pair of three-pointers, while fellow juniors Lily Coil and Aracely Garza had eight points each, but the Wildcats would nonetheless fall to 2-1. Columbus can earn an immediate bounce-back win tonight when they return to action by facing conference foe Louisa-Muscatine.
