The Columbus Wildcat girls are still sitting atop the early standings in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference after Friday night’s 44-22 victory over Louisa-Muscatine on their home hardwood. Columbus did most of their damage early, building a 20-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and rolling from there.

Point guard Ariana Vergara paced the Wildcats with 20 points scored and three made three-pointers but also had six rebounds and six assists. Fellow junior Lily Coil finished the night with 17 points, 11 rebounds and a whopping eight steals, while Frannie Sosa added four points, six boards, three assists and three steals to help Columbus improve to 3-1 overall and stay a perfect 3-0 in the Super Conference North.

The Wildcat boys were not fortuitous, falling to Louisa-Muscatine 82-62 Friday. Despite senior Tim Hills-Carrier putting up 15 points and nine rebounds, Columbus could never recover from a 26-11 deficit in the opening period. Sophomore Gabe Zuniga poured in 14 points and freshman Ellis Hills-Carrier added 13 points and two assists, but the ‘Cats still fall to 0-3. Both Columbus teams return to the basketball court tomorrow night at Pekin.
