Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ wrestling put together a good showing Saturday at the Williamsburg Duals, including winning their first two team competitions 39-36 over Davenport Assumption and 57-19 over Center Point-Urbana. While the Wildcats did fall 50-25 to Pella and were beaten 40-36 by Marshalltown, they did also score a 40-35 victory over the host Williamsburg.
The day was a particularly good one for Columbus/WMU’s Russell Coil, who won all five of his bouts at 285 pounds with four pins and a 13-2 major decision. Fellow senior Ty Scorpil had four victories via pin at 126 lbs, while junior Jacob Nelson picked up two pins and won a pair of decisions at 113.
Sophomore Dakota Aney also had a good day for the Wildcats with three pins at 106 lbs. Senior Cole Storm and junior Riley Kaalberg each had a pair of pins at 165 and 190, respectively, while sophomore Bowen Thomson claimed decisions by scores of 6-2 and 8-4 at 132. Sophomore Kason Dopler won a 7-0 decision and pinned another opponent at 175, while sophomore Jaxton Jones got a victory by technical knockout at 120.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union also got pins to win from senior Cael Phillips at 144; sophomore Trevor Phillips at 157; and junior Cooper Buffington at 215. The Wildcat boys will next wrestle Thursday at home against Highland and West Burlington Notre Dame.
