It was the WACO girls and Winfield-Mount Union boys who came away victorious in an annual Southeast Iowa Super Conference basketball rivalry that was renewed last night in Wayland. WACO jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the girls’ game and stretched their advantage to 12 points at halftime, keeping Winfield-Mount Union at bay the rest of the way for a 47-29 victory.
Senior Emma Wagler led the Warriors with 14 points, while fellow senior Marie Farmer scored 13 points and senior Naomi Egli added 10 to help their team improve to 2-1 in the Super Conference North and 2-2 overall. Sophomore Madisen Kellogg poured in a game-high 21 points for the Wolves, but they still remain winless in conference action and drop to 2-4 overall.
On the boys’ side, WMU pushed an early five-point lead with a 14-5 run and stretched the advantage to 24-10 by the half. WACO would cut into the deficit a bit in the third quarter, but the Wolves finished the game on a 14-9 run and defeated the Warriors 46-30.
Senior Cam Buffington led Winfield-Mount Union with a game-high 15 points, while junior Jake Edwards and senior Carter Loyd each hit a pair of three-pointers and combined to score 15 points. Senior Gabe Hemsworth also hit a pair of triples and added eight points as the Wolves remain unbeaten in league play and are now 3-1 in total.
Senior Hunter Hughes scored 12 points to lead WACO, but the Warriors still drop to 1-1 both overall and in the Super Conference North. Both teams next play Friday, with WACO taking on Columbus and Winfield-Mount Union meeting Wapello.
