The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk and WACO Warrior girls wrestling teams were two of 28 that competed at Monday’s Williamsburg Girl’s Invitational. The Hawks were 16th in the team standings with their 61 points. East Buchanan won the team title with their 186 points. Top finish for the Hawks came from Ellie Brenneman at 140lbs in fourth after a 3-2 day. Brenneman spoke with KCII sports after the meet about the night. Brenneman said, “Tonight was about taking my shot, getting in there, and getting to work. It was more about the matches that I lost tonight that stood out to me. The matches I lose are opportunities to learn and improve. It comes down to little details that I need to fine tune. I need to rewatch the matches and learn from them.”
Other place winners for Mid-Prairie included Austyn Sexton fifth at 120lbs, Mardie Berry and Sam Stacey each sixth at 155 and 235 respectively and Ellie Callahan seventh at 170.
The WACO Warriors were 22nd with 23 points. Rylee Rice took third at 115lbs to lead the way for WACO. She spoke with KCII sports about the highlights of her night. Rice said, “I think about the one thing I’m going to do. I go for it and work on it from there. In my last win, the girl was really aggressive. I went up to 115lbs today. I still got the pin. I’m really happy about that. It was the chicken wing that finished it. The move that got her down was the blast double. It was a really good win!”
Other Warriors who competed included Athena Flores, Emma Szewczyk and Macy Bonebrake.
The Hawks and Warriors will both be back on the mat Saturday when they travel to Vinton-Shellsburg.
