Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ wrestling earned a pair of home dual victories last night, defeating the Highland Huskies 69-12 after edging out West Burlington Notre Dame 41-36. The Wildcats needed pins in their final three bouts to take the first dual, but they got just that from senior Cole Storm at 165 pounds; sophomore Kason Dopler at 175; and junior Riley Kaalberg at 190.
Junior Jacob Nelson won by technical knockout at 113 lbs against the Falcons, while sophomore Bowen Thomson and junior Cooper Buffington had pins at 138 and 215, respectively. Against Highland, Columbus/WMU got pins to win from Storm and Dopler, while Thomson won a 4-2 decision. Junior Kohlby Newsom was a winner by pin at 138 lbs against the Huskies, as was senior Cael Phillips at 144.
Highland did get a victory against Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union from freshman Tyler Pierson at 120 lbs, while senior Remington Fields also pinned his opponent at 150. Junior Isaac Kleese picked up the lone points for the Huskies against West Burlington Notre Dame, winning an 8-0 major decision at 175 in what ended up being a team loss by a score of 62-4. While Highland will next wrestle this weekend at North Cedar, Columbus/WMU is headed to Colfax-Mingo.
