For the second year in a row, the Wellman Volunteer Fire Department is holding its Christmas Toy Give-A-Way event. From 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, families in need can come to the Wellman Fire Station at 95 3rd Street in Wellman to pick up gifts for their children.

Last year, the Christmas Toy Give-A-Way saw beneficiaries from Wellman, Kalona, Washington, Hills, and Fairfield. Tomorrow, any parents or guardians in need of a little extra help this holiday season are welcome to take part in what is already becoming a tradition for the Fire Department.

Secretary Treasurer for the Wellman Volunteer Fire Department, Tracy Owens, was shocked at how much the event has grown in just two years. They have received checks worth upwards of $800, countless toy donations, and some Mid-Prairie students even contributed more than $1,500 from a collection at school.

Owens tells KCII that the support has truly made the Toy Give-A-Way special. “Obviously we’re putting some money back into this, but just the local residents that have donated thousands of dollars this year towards this is staggering, but we are very fortunate. The community is always very supportive of the fire station. This is a give-back to the community and other locations as well.”

Anyone planning on benefiting from the Wellman Fire Department Christmas Toy Give-A-Way are just asked that they do not bring their kids with them to collect the gifts.
