Iowa’s second gun deer season begins today and will continue through Sunday, December 17.

The gun season, which was initially shotgun-only, has expanded over the years to include muzzleloaders, handguns, and rifles. Following the first season, which ended on Wednesday, a total of 61,923 deer have been harvested in Iowa this year. Just over 900 were reported out of Washington County.

Shooting hours for all deer seasons are a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. All those participating in the second gun deer season are reminded to wear their blaze orange and follow the State’s hunting regulations. To review these guidelines, click here.
