The WACO Warriors earned a pair of basketball victories over the conference rival Highland Huskies last night in Wayland. WACO took a 19-10 lead in the first quarter of the girls’ game, but a 14-3 run to finish the first half put the Warriors in front 33-14 at the break, and they controlled the game from there.

Senior Emma Wagler had 13 points scored to lead WACO, while freshman Brenna Graber added seven points to help the Warriors improve to 3-2 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 3-4 overall. Sarah Burton led Highland with 10 points and fellow senior Kerra Longbine had nine, but the Huskies still drop to 3-2 in the Super Conference North and 6-2 in total.

The WACO boys also defeated Highland 76-22 yesterday, racing out to a 27-5 lead after a quarter of play and never looking back. Hunter Hughes hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to a game-high 16 points, while fellow senior Colton Leichty and juniors Clayton Miller and Isaac Rich had 10 points each to help the Warriors move to 3-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall.

Junior Louis Horak led Highland with six points, but the Huskies are still winless so far this season. Both Highland teams will next play Friday against Wapello, while both WACO teams will head to Kalona Friday to take on Hillcrest Academy.
