sigourney-keota-2

Keota and Sigourney both swept basketball doubleheaders Tuesday night, with the Savage girls and Eagle boys using the conference wins to stay near the top of the South Iowa Cedar League.

The Keota boys cruised past Belle Plaine 91-50, but the Eagles were only up by four after one quarter and by nine at halftime. It wasn’t until they went on a 25-8 run in the third period that Keota seized control.

Sawyer Stout paced the Eagles with 25 points scored, while fellow senior Evan Vittetoe had 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Junior Billie Kindred finished with 12 points, eight boards and three assists, while sophomore Chase Haifley poured in nine points off the bench to keep Keota undefeated.

Meanwhile, the Keota girls are winless no longer after beating Belle Plaine 53-28. The Eagles started red hot with an 18-2 run and never looked back, thanks largely to Kimberly Clarahan finishing with 15 points and 10 steals. Fellow junior Grace Conger hit three three-pointers for Keota and scored 13 points, while sophomore Kennedy Jackson had 10 points and four rebounds to help the Eagles move to 1-3 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 1-6 overall.

The Sigourney girls defeated Iowa Valley 56-37, thanks largely to closing what had been a relatively competitive game on a 13-4 run. Ava Fisch led the Savages in scoring with 14 points, while fellow junior Josephine Moore had 10 points and eight rebounds and senior Carly Goodwin piled up 10 points, six boards and nine assists. Senior Erin Dawson added nine points as Sigourney improves to 3-1 in conference action and 6-1 overall.

The Sigourney boys were also winners Tuesday, jumping out to a 22-7 lead after a quarter of play and going on to defeat Iowa Valley 68-34. The Savages are now 3-2 in league play and 4-2 overall. While both Sigourney squads next play tomorrow night at Montezuma, both Keota teams will face Lynnville-Sully tomorrow evening on the road.
