There was plenty of action on the basketball court Friday night in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference, including the Columbus girls and Winfield-Mount Union boys maintaining their place atop the conference by winning games Friday night in a doubleheader in Columbus Junction.

Columbus was already ahead of WMU 19-6 after a quarter of play in the girls’ game and up 19 points at halftime, but a 19-0 run in the third quarter is where the Wildcats pulled away, going on to defeat the Wolves 55-20.

Lily Coil had another big game for the Wildcats, finishing with team highs of 22 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Junior teammate Ariana Vergara added 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals to help Columbus remain perfect in the Super Conference North and improve to 7-1 overall. Winfield-Mount Union falls to 1-6 in conference action and 3-6 in total.

WMU would dominate the boys’ game, defeating Columbus 65-22 to remain unbeaten in league play and raise their overall record to 5-1. The Wildcats drop to 1-4 in the conference and 1-5 overall.

The Highland Huskies were also winners in girls’ basketball Friday night, muscling past Wapello 37-28. After building a 29-11 lead at halftime, Highland had to weather an 11-0 Wapello run to start the third period, but they would find a way to hold on.

Senior Sarah Burton once again led the Huskies in scoring with 16 points, while junior Katie Herrig hit three three-pointers to help the Huskies move to 4-2 in the Super Conference North and 7-2 overall.

The Highland boys fell 38-30 to Wapello, being unable to rally from an early five-point deficit. The Huskies are still winless this season and will try to change things over the weekend, as both Highland teams are next playing English Valleys.
