Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ wrestling was once again in top form over the weekend as they took fourth in the team standings at the Fort Madison Invitational. The Wildcats’ team score of 328 was only 54 points behind champion Dubuque Hemsptead.

Leading the way for Columbus/WMU was senior Russell Coil, who was the tournament champion at 285 pounds. After pinning all three of his Pool A opponents on Friday, Coil also pinned his first two opponents in the knockout rounds Saturday and would win the title bout after his opponent had to forfeit due to injury.

Ty Scorpil took third place for the Wildcats at 126 lbs, while fellow seniors Cole Storm and Cael Phillips were fifth at 165 and sixth at 144, respectively. Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union got fourth-place finishes from sophomore Dakota Aney at 106 lbs; junior Jacob Nelson at 113; senior Ian Estudillo at 120;  and sophomore Kason Dopler at 175.

While Washington had a 12th-place finish as a team, sophomore Aaron Boone brought home the tournament crown at 132 lbs. Boone pinned three opponents and beat another by technical knockout in pool play before getting a technical knockout in the quarterfinals and a pin in the semis, with a victory by a 7-2 decision in the final sealing the deal.

Senior Chase Grenier was a runner-up for the Demons at 157 lbs, pinning all three of his pool-play opponents and his first two bracket-round opponents but dropping a 9-4 decision in the finals. Junior Jude Carter was fourth at 138 lbs for Washington, while sophomore Caden Greiner was eighth at 126. The Highland Huskies had just one medalist for the weekend at Fort Madison, as senior Brock Thomann finished sixth at 126.
