The Washington Demons will try to score a pair of Southeast Conference basketball wins before heading into the holidays as Washington visits Fort Madison tonight in a doubleheader you can hear on KCII.

The Washington girls had a three-game win streak come to an end with a loss Saturday at Williamsburg, but the Demons are still 5-4 and have won two of their first three games in the Southeast Conference.

Sophomore point guard Adalyn Long leads the attack by averaging over 11-and-a-half points and nearly four rebounds and three steals per game, while juniors Kendall and Lauren Hinrichsen have picked up their scoring pace of late to go with a combined four steals a game. Washington head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports that his team is starting to put the pieces together.

“I really think this group is really stinking close to being really, really good,” Rugg says. “They believe in each other, and the confidence is there and the belief is there, so it’s just a matter of us going out and executing and doing the things that we know we can do.”

The Demons will try to take down a Fort Madison team that they lost to in both meetings last year, but only by a combined 15 points. The Bloodhounds are currently 6-2 overall and also have a 2-1 record in conference action.

In the boys’ game, Washington is hoping to respond from back-to-back losses, including an overtime thriller at Williamsburg Saturday, that dropped the Demons to 3-5.

Sophomore Drew Conrad has scored in double figures in every game and is averaging almost 14 points per contest, while Logan McDole is hitting almost half of his shot attempts and is putting up over 12 points per game. But Washington head coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports that he hopes the junior continues to shine and that his team continues to work hard.

“In the locker room, we’ve talked about Logan [and] getting him the basketball more,” Stark says. “He’s been doing some great things with the basketball, and those are just things that we’ll continue to get better at and get more and more comfortable, as a team, to know the strengths and weaknesses of our team, and the effort is something that, hopefully, we’ll continue to build on.”

The Demons are trying to avoid a 1-3 start to league play and will face a Fort Madison squad that is 2-1 in the Southeast Conference and 3-3 overall. Senior Hunter Cresswell leads the Bloodhounds with almost 14 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Washington will be trying to get their fourth straight win in boys’ basketball against Fort Madison. You can hear both games as the Demons duel with the Bloodhounds tonight on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app, starting with the Countdown to Tip-Off at 5:30.
