Columbus Wildcat girls’ basketball earned another victory Monday night, but they had to grind their way through overtime in order to defeat Central Lee 47-43. After trailing by one at the end of the first quarter, Columbus would lead 20-18 at halftime and 27-26 after three quarters of play. Central Lee would force the game to an extra period even at 38, but the Wildcats would close out the Hawks with a 9-5 run in the extra session to secure a thrilling win.

Lily Coil led the way for Columbus by piling up game highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Fellow junior Frannie Sosa also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Isabel Rendon and junior Ariana Vergara had seven points each to help the Wildcats win their sixth straight game and improve to 8-1.

The Columbus boys would suffer a 76-35 loss Monday to Central Lee. Already down 19-5 after a quarter of play, the Wildcats’ deficit swelled to 21 points by halftime and nearly 40 by the third period.

Sophomore Gabe Zuniga scored 15 points to lead Columbus, but the ‘Cats still fall to 1-7. While the Columbus boys are now off for winter break until January, the Wildcat girls will have one more game before the break tomorrow night when they face New London.
