The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls wrestling team celebrated their seniors Monday with a home River Valley Conference quad against West Liberty, Anamosa and Wilton. The Hawks scored a pair of wins on the day. They opened the night with a victory over the Beavers 42-30. The Hawks got wins in contested matches from Ruby Miller at 105lbs by fall, Ashlee Farrier at 130 by fall, and Ellie Callahan at 170 by fall.

The Hawks got revenge on Anamosa at the end of the night by a 36-33 score. The Blue Raiders had beaten Mid-Prairie last week 42-36. On Monday, the Golden Hawks got a fall from Ellie Brenneman at 135lbs.

The Golden Hawks only loss on the night came at the hands of the unbeaten West Liberty Comets 42-36. Mid-Prairie got wins in contested matches from Becca Westfall at 110lbs by fall, Ashlee Farrier at 130 by fall, Mardie Berry at 155 by fall, Ellie Callahan at 170 by fall and Sam Stacey at 235 by fall.

After the meet, Golden Hawk undefeated wrestlers on the night, Stacey and Berry spoke with KCII sports about their favorite wins and the atmosphere in Wellman.

Stacey said, “We were in a great environment, one that we know. It’s that comfortable aura. We did really well tonight at getting halves in when we were on top. Snapping her down onto the mat and getting an easier angle to get a half in was important.”

Berry added, “It feels really good. There is a lot of team support. You can feel that energy, that spark. (In the win) I felt her pressure, I snapped her down, felt the thud, ran around, put a half in and pinned her. That was my favorite win, the second period pin. It feels so good to know that you have the power and strength with your body. It gets something going.”

The Hawks now stand with a 6-4 dual record going into Christmas break. Mid-Prairie honored their three senior wrestlers Gabi Robertson, Ellie Brenneman and Sam Stacey with a ceremony during the meet. The Hawks are back on the mat January 5th for a tournament at Highland.
