The Highland Husky girls and Winfield-Mount Union Wolf boys came away with victories Tuesday night in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference basketball doubleheader in Winfield. Winfield-Mount Union had the early two-point lead in the girls’ game, but Highland would tie things up by halftime and used a 14-8 run in the third quarter to take a 35-29 lead. The Huskies then finished the game on a 14-5 run to beat the Wolves 49-34.
Junior Katie Herrig knocked down four three-pointers on her way to a team-high 16 points while also grabbing six rebounds for Highland. Senior Sarah Burton had 14 points, 16 rebounds and four steals to help the Huskies improve to 5-2 in the Super Conference North and 8-3 overall. WMU falls to 1-7 in conference action and 3-8 overall.
The Winfield-Mount Union boys dominated early and often, building a 24-4 lead after a quarter of play and going on to defeat Highland 66-13. Cam Buffington scored a game-high 18 points for the Wolves, while fellow senior Abram Edwards had another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Carter Loyd added 12 points and four steals as WMU raises its record to 7-0 in league play and 8-1 overall.
Highland is still winless in the Super Conference North and drops to 1-7 overall. Both teams are now off until January 2nd, when the Huskies face Columbus and Winfield-Mount Union takes on Hillcrest Academy.
