It was the Lone Tree girls and WACO boys who came away with the wins when the teams competed in Southeast Iowa Super Conference basketball Tuesday night in Wayland. Lone Tree used an 11-6 run at the end of the first half of the girls’ game to build a 26-19 lead going into halftime, then stretched the advantage to double digits in the second half and defeated the Warriors 49-39.
Sophomore Finley Jacque hit four three-pointers and poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Lions. Senior Avery Lisk added nine points as Lone Tree improves to 6-1 in the Super Conference North and 10-1 overall. Senior Emma Wagler had a team-high 15 points for WACO, but the Warriors fall to 4-3 in conference action and 4-5 overall.
WACO expanded a nine-point lead from the first quarter of the boys’ game to a 37-23 advantage by the half. It would be a 26-9 run in the third period that put Lone Tree away, as the Warriors went on to defeat the Lions 74-49.
Guard Hunter Hughes scored a game-high 21 points for WACO and came up with a whopping eight steals on defense. Fellow senior Colton Leichty had a strong all-around night with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals, while senior Chase Waterhouse added 11 points and four rebounds to power the Warriors to a fourth straight win and a record of 5-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Sophomore Domomic Garcia scored a team-high 12 points for Lone Tree, while senior Ethan Bockelman added eight points. The Lions drop to 2-5 in the Super Conference North and 5-6 overall. Both teams are off for the winter break until January 2nd, when WACO will face Louisa-Muscatine and Lone Tree will take on Wapello.
