Winfield-Mt. Union students are seeing their hard work begin to take shape outside of the classroom with the building of a disc golf course on campus.
The endeavor began last school year during Spring Term, a week-long learning experience at WMU where students immerse themselves in a topic or project of their choosing. Students researched and even played some disc golf courses, along with learning about the costs to eventually design their own. They then reached out to local businesses for support with funding the project. Just recently, the Enhance Henry County Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the school. This amount will allow students to complete the course, which will include nine holes surrounding the football and baseball fields.
The project has been a joint effort between advisors Trevor Kongable, Sierra Wise, and Tyler Stevens. Elementary Principal Karina Wahls wrote the grant application. Students who have played a role in the course include Isaac Wilson, Merrek Klein, Riley Kammerer, Jaxton Jones, Kai Ball, Chet Anderson, Alden Peck, Tate Beard, Kevin Perez, Tayson Samuels, Ashlyn Snook, Zach Cupps, Oliver Jones, Adlin Wilkerson, Graham Haines, Mikal Hussel, Brenden Simmons, and Mason Cooley.
Weather permitting, the hope is to have two holes completed before the new year and have all nine finished by next spring.
