Winfield-Mount Union High School senior Cam Buffington can now officially call himself an Iowa Hawkeye. After verbally committing two years ago, Buffington signed his letter of intent to play football at the University of Iowa last Wednesday.
After becoming one of 20 players to put their name on the dotted line for the Hawkeye Class of 2024 on National Signing Day, Buffington tells KCII Sports that playing big-time college football is a dream come true, but he’s more than ready to live the dream.
“Probably when I first started it,” Buffington says, “when I first started playing tackle football in third grade, I just loved it and I was good at it. I was scoring touchdowns, so I felt good. I’ve always kind of knew I wanted to play for as long as I can. Now, I just got to get in there and start working.”
Buffington will continue playing linebacker at Iowa, a position where he was a two-time all-state player at Winfield-Mount Union. He says playing for the Hawkeyes more than fits everything that he wants out of college and playing football at the next level.
“[After meeting] the coaches and getting close with all the coaches,” he says, “and seeing their program [and] how they develop kids, it’s just crazy, so there was no other choice for me, really.”
Buffington piled up 106-and-a-half total tackles, including 18.5 tackles for loss, in just this last season, helping power Winfield-Mount Union to an 11-0 start and a trip to the 8-man football state semifinals. Buffington had over 300 tackles in his career with the Wolves, but he also finished his time at WMU as arguably the best running back in school history, amassing over 5,700 yards from scrimmage and scoring 125 touchdowns.
