Winfield-Mount Union senior Abram Edwards is headed for a special journey in the coming years, and he took the first step last Wednesday when he signed his letter of intent to attend the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York and play football for the Army Black Knights.

Edwards is one of 41 players who signed with Army on National Signing Day. He tells KCII Sports that finally making it official is a great feeling and that the choice to pick such a unique place to play college football has been quite a journey.

“It feels amazing,” Edwards says. “[I am] looking forward to the experience and everything that will happen. I was just planning on, after high school, trying to play football somewhere, but then Army contacted me, so I thought that would be a great opportunity to experience and I’d be able to play football and serve my country.”

Beyond the normal process of being recruited to a college sports team, Edwards says there’s also a lot of extra work that goes into being admitted into one of the nation’s military schools, but he believes it’s all worth it.

“It’s a crazy, insane process,” he says. “It’s time consuming, that’s for sure, not only playing football but also academically, because they’re [a top] school for academics as well. But I think it’s rewarding, once it’s all said and done.”

Edwards will be playing tight end at Army, a position he excelled at for Winfield-Mount Union. Edwards caught 85 passes for over 1,400 yards and 20 touchdowns during his career at WMU. That includes catching six TDs and almost 400 yards receiving this past season in helping the Wolves start 11-0 and reach the 8-man football state semifinals.
