The Highland Community School District was the recipient of two grants this year from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation.
Highland received $37,000 in the spring, which was used to replace the classroom door locks over the summer. More recently, the District was granted $34,689 at the Riverboat Foundation’s fall grant reception.
The fall grant funds will go towards new bleachers for the Elementary School. Superintendent Ken Crawford shared the plans with KCII. “We’re gonna pull those out and put in a new set. Those bleachers in the elementary have been in there since 1994, so it’s been a while and we feel like there’s upgrades for safety of the people sitting in there, there’s some ADA accommodations that I think will be a nice improvement as well as there will be electrical which I think will be safer getting them in and out for everybody.”
Highland CSD will be working on this upgrade with TownsEnd Co. out of Urbandale. The cost of the project, including removal and installation is estimated at $61,164. Tentative plans are to have the new bleachers completed by spring 2024.
