At their December meeting, the Columbus School Board agreed to hold a special election on Tuesday, March 5. This election will ask voters to approve the renewal of the district’s Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL).
District property owners would not be subject to a new tax. Rather, approval in the special election would simply extend the district’s current PPEL of 67 cents per $1,000 valuation. The board is seeking a 10-year renewal, beginning at the end of Fiscal Year 2026.
There is the possibility that March 5 could become a joint election, as the Louisa County Board of Supervisors are considering that date for an emergency management services property tax referendum. This would ease the election expense for both the school district and the County, although no decision has yet been made regarding the EMS tax.
