The leaders of the Southeast Iowa Superconference North for boys and girls basketball are set to be featured on the KCII Area Game of the Week Friday, as Winfield-Mt. Union hosts Lone Tree.

The boys hit the floor first, with sixth-ranked WMU sitting atop the conference standings. Picking up where they left off before break, the Wolves handled Hillcrest Academy 72-35 Tuesday. Abram Edwards led with 20, but was one of four Wolves to reach double figures in the win. WMU averages more than 57 points per game thanks to the ninth-best field goal percentage in 1A basketball. The Wolves are also tied for the fifth-most assists with 188, and enter Friday’s contest with 47 blocks, seventh-most in 1A. They look to keep their perfect conference record in tact as they face Lone Tree for the first time this season.

Lone Tree’s boys come into Winfield with a 5-7 record, having dropped their 2024 opener to Wapello Tuesday. The Lions have nearly matched the Wolves’ offensive production, scoring around 56 per night. Part of this success stems from the team’s 607 shot attempts and 137 offensive rebounds, both fifth-best in Class 1A. Individually, Pietro Setti owns the sixth-highest field goal percentage, making more than 67 percent of his attempts from the floor. Emmett Burke is third in the class with 41 steals. Lone Tree hopes to see continued defensive production to improve their more than 57 points allowed each game. While the Lions have taken 21 of the last 31 between the two teams, they aim to end a current six-game win streak for WMU.

It’s the girls in the nightcap Friday as Winfield-Mt. Union looks to ascend in the Superconference standings. Despite a 20-point fourth quarter, the Wolves were unable to complete a comeback on Tuesday versus Hillcrest. Their offense, which scores a little more than 32 per-night runs through Madisen Kellogg. The sophomore’s 185 points leads the team by more than 130. WMU is shooting 27.2% from the field, 15.7% beyond the arc, and 49% from the free-throw line to go along with 26 rebounds, seven assists, eight steals, one block, and 26 turnovers per game.

The Wolves welcome conference-leading Lone Tree, entering the day 11-1 overall. The Lions have won eight in a row, including a 63-40 victory over Wapello on Tuesday. The fifth-highest scorer in 1A basketball, Finley Jacque added 21 points in the win, while Cate Sexton dominated the boards with a game-high 17 rebounds. As a team, Lone Tree leads 1A in shot attempts, three-point attempts, steals, and offensive rebounds. They are also top-10 in points, overall rebounds, blocks, field goals made, three-pointers made, and free throw attempts. The Lions took down WMU earlier this season by a score of 67-26, the first time they bested the Wolves since 2019.
