Winfield-Mt. Union boys and Lone Tree girls basketball maintained their respective conference leads on Friday night, splitting the KCII Area Game of the Week doubleheader in Winfield.

The boys kicked off the night, with WMU taking the contest 68-31. The Wolves jumped to a quick 21-7 lead after the first quarter and made it 35-19 at the break. Hardly a perfect game offensively, Winfield-Mt. Union maintained a comfortable lead despite missing 14 free throws in the first half and a number of prime opportunities down low. Cam Buffington fared just fine from the charity stripe, finishing six of seven on his way to a 20-point night to lead all scorers. Abram Edwards and Jake Edwards joined him in double figures while also propelling WMU to 40 total rebounds. Using their size and some back court pressure, the Wolves made it difficult for Lone Tree to get anything going offensively. The Lions managed just 12 points in the second half as the Wolves cruised to their eighth win in a row and stayed perfect in conference play.

Lone Tree’s girls handled their business in game two by a final of 64-46. In similar fashion to the WMU boys, the Lady Lions grabbed an early lead and never let it go. Nine different Lone Tree players scored in the victory, led by Finley Jacque with 20. Cate Sexton and Ava Christofferson each added eight, in addition to being integral pieces to a ferocious Lion defense. Pressure led to frequent turnovers which Lone Tree converted into easy point on the other end to keep a healthy distance between them and the Wolves. Despite their struggles, WMU saw each player on the roster score at least one field goal. Pacey Schlee and Suttyn Schlee set the pace with 12 and 10 respectively. With the win, the Lady Lions improved to 12-1 to stay atop the Superconference North. Winfield-Mt. Union basketball hits the hardwood next week with back to back doubleheaders with Mediapolis and Louisa-Muscatine. Lone Tree, meanwhile squares off with Columbus on Tuesday.
