The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys wrestling team continues to enjoy success on the mat and others around the state are taking notice. The Wildcats have made their way into the top eight of the latest Class 2A poll from IAWrestle.com this week. The ‘Cats own an 18-3 dual record this season, highlighted by a pair of victories over a ranked Burlington, Notre Dame team, a win against 3A Southeast Polk, and an unblemished mark in the Southeast Iowa Superconference. Their only setbacks this year are to 3A squads from Pella and Marshalltown and No. 3 in 2A Creston. They have competed in two traditional tournaments this season, finishing fourth at both Fort Madison and Highland.

Individually, the Wildcats have a pair of ranked wrestlers in their lineup according to IAWrestle.com. Russell Coil at 285lbs has rolled to a 28-0 record this season and is currently No. 3 in the latest poll. Coil, a senior, hit the 100 win milestone at last weekend’s Gary Curtis Invitational at Highland with a semifinal pin of Hunter Hahn from Louisa-Muscatine. His championship in Riverside Saturday was his second title of the year. Coil also climbed to the top spot on the podium at Fort Madison.

Fellow senior Ty Scorpil is No. 9 in 2A this week at 126lbs. He owns a 27-3 record this season. Scorpil was runner-up last weekend at Highland.

Coil and Scorpil are 1-2 in wins this year for the ‘Cats with Jacob Nelson, Dakota Aney, and Karson Dopler all at 20 wins or better and Tayson Samuels, Justin Knipfer, Tyson Kaalberg, Riley Kaalberg, Max Nunez, Keaton Starkweather, Fritz Figaro, Cole Storm, Jaxton Jones, Bowen Thomson, Trentin Gary, Jaiden Beeding, Ian Estudillo, Ronaldo Vargas, and Trevor Phillips all with winning records.
