A pair of Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams continued their excellent girls’ basketball seasons by picking up conference wins last night. The Highland Huskies edged out the WACO Warriors 52-49 in Riverside. Even though Highland raced out to an early 20-7 lead, WACO got back within two points by halftime and kept it close the rest of the night. But the Huskies would be able to fend off the Warriors long enough to earn the win.
Junior Katie Herrig had a huge night for Highland by hitting six three-pointers and scoring a game-high 20 points. While the Huskies improve to 8-2 in the Super Conference North and 11-4 overall, WACO falls to 6-5 in conference action and 6-8 in total.
The Columbus Wildcats’ 41-28 victory over Wapello last night kept them in first place in the Super Conference North. Columbus blew open a game they were leading 17-14 with a 17-1 run in the third quarter and never looked back.
Point guard Ariana Vergara led the Wildcats with 16 points scored, while fellow junior Aracely Garza added 13 points as Columbus jumps to 11-1 in league play and 13-3 overall.
