The Sigourney Savages came up with a sweep of the Highland Huskies in a basketball doubleheader Monday night. The Sigourney girls already had a two-point lead going into the second quarter when they reeled off a 15-3 run to take a 26-12 lead into halftime. Highland would nearly rally from a 17-point deficit in the final period by finishing the game on a 16-6 run, but the Savages would survive to beat the Huskies 46-39.
Sigourney senior Carly Goodwin had a game-high four three-pointers and finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Junior Jospehine Moore added 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals to help the Savages improve to 9-4. Senior Sarah Burton led Highland with 14 points, 16 rebounds and four steals, but the Huskies nonetheless fall to 10-4.
The Sigourney boys raced out to a 19-5 lead over Highland and then nearly doubled the advantage to 37-13 by the half. The Savages cruised from there, finishing off the Huskies by a final score of 64-29.
Junior Isaac Bruns hit a trio of triples and scored a game-high 19 points to lead Sigourney. Sophomore Solon Yates also hit three treys and finished with 13 points, while sophomore John Berg had a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and five steals to raise the Savages’ record to 7-5. Junior Logan McFarland had a pair of shots fall from beyond the arc and scored 10 points to pace Highland, but the Huskies still drop to 1-10.
