The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams were swept Friday night by the Wilton Beavers in a River Valley Conference doubleheader in Wellman. After the Beavers took a brief lead in the third, the Hawks scored seven straight and ultimately turned it into a 12-2 run to lead by 10 after a Brooklyn Schneider three at 39-29. From there, the Beavers finished the fourth on a 13-2 run of their own to grab the win. The Hawks had a final chance in the last 30 seconds, a steal and missed layup turned into an out of bounds baseline play with 10 seconds left and a last look wouldn’t drop. The two teams combined for 49 turnovers, 25 by the Beavers. Mid-Prairie won the glass by six. Kinsey Drake led Wilton with a game high 17 points. Jovi Evans went for 13 for Mid-Prairie. The Golden Hawks are now 8-7 on the season as Wilton improves to 6-8.
In the nightcap, the Hawks fell into a deep hole they couldn’t climb out of in a 72-61 defeat. After trailing 20-17 at the end of one, Mid-Prairie saw the Beavers go on a 21-2 blitz to take a 46-25 lead into the break. Mid-Prairie came out of half with their own run at 16-3 and would get as close as seven, but Wilton did enough to keep the Hawks at arms length down the stretch. Wilton won the turnover battle 19-11 and outrebounded Mid-Prairie by nine. Bryer Putman led a Beaver quartet in double figures with 24. Bryce Henry led the Hawks with a career high 29 points. Dylan Henry added 16. The Beavers are now 9-5 on the year while the Hawks fall to 6-7. Mid-Prairie is next on the floor Monday when they travel to Washington.
