As part of a busy weekend in high school boys’ wrestling, the biggest winner was Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, who captured the team championship at this year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament Saturday in Burlington. Columbus/WMU scored 247 points to edge out host Burlington Notre Dame by one and finish over 90 points clear of third-place Mediapolis.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was Russell Coil, who continued his undefeated season by capturing a conference title at 285 pounds. The senior improved to 42-0 by pinning all three of his opponents. Sophomore Kason Dopler also won a conference crown at 175 lbs, pinning his first opponent before winning a 6-0 decision in the semifinals and a 3-0 decision in the finals.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union also had six different wrestlers finish second in their respective weight classes, including sophomore Dakota Aney at 106 lbs; senior Ty Scorpil at 126; sophomore Bowen Thomson at 132; sophomore Trevor Phillips at 150; senior Cole Storm at 157; and junior Riley Kaalberg at 190.
Junior Cooper Buffington finished third for the Wildcats at 215, as did junior Jacob Nelson at 113; sophomore Jaxton Jones at 120; and junior Cael Phillips at 144. Junior Sheaden Adams was fourth at 165 and junior Kohlby Newsom took fifth at 138.
Highland had a strong showing at the Super Conference Tournament by finishing fourth in the team scoring. The Huskies produced an individual conference champ in senior Luke Guseman, who earned a pin and won a 14-5 major decision at 120 lbs.
Freshman Gauge Richardson was fifth at 144, while bronze medals went to sophomore Brock Thomann at 126; senior Jack Peiffer at 157; and freshman Jose Ramirez at 165. Highland also had fourth-place finishers in junior Landon Bell at 106; freshman Tyler Pierson at 113; and senior Remington Fields at 150.
WACO was fifth as a team thanks in part to Louden Huisenga becoming a Super Conference champion at 190 lbs with a pair of pins. Fellow junior Gage Samo was the runner-up at 113 while seniors John Mclaughlin and John Stauffer were fourth at 126 and 285, respectively. The Warriors also had fifth-place finishes from freshmen Braxton Stauffer at 150 and Tommy Unternahrer at 215, while junior Lane Bachman was sixth at 144, as was freshman Cylas Elder at 165.
Lone Tree also had three Super Conference medalists, as Cole Walmsley was sixth at 106 lbs, while fellow freshmen Brock Nebergall and Brody Magruder were fifth at 113 and 175, respectively.
Sigourney-Keota could not quite repeat as South Iowa Cedar League champions, finishing fifth at the conference tournament Saturday in Victor. SK was led by a pair of runners-up in Brady Clark and Jake Moore.
Sophomore Jacob Libe finished third at 150 for Sigourney-Keota, while sophomore Owen Menke and junior Zach Guffey had fourth-place medals at 190 and 285, respectively. Senior Carter Wyatt added a fifth-place finish at 144, as did Ashton Schwab at 165 and fellow junior Kaden Kopp at 175.
