The Highland Huskies and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves split a basketball doubleheader Tuesday night in Riverside. The Highland girls took a 15-6 lead in the first quarter was still in front by nine points going into halftime. The Huskies led WMU 31-20 going into the final period and would be able to fend the Wolves off down the stretch.
Senior Sarah Burton led the way for Highland with 21 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Junior Katie Herrig came off the bench to hit a pair of three-point shots and added 10 points and six rebounds as the Huskies improve to 11-3 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 14-5 overall.
Sophomore Madisen Kellogg paced Winfield-Mount Union with 15 points, six rebounds and three thefts, but the Wolves still fall to 2-13 in conference play and 4-14 in total.
The WMU boys raced out to a 17-2 lead against Highland and stretched that advantage to 32 points by hafltime, cruising to a 76-15 victory. Senior guard Carter Loyd led the fourth-ranked team in Class 1A with 17 points, while junior Jake Edwards had a double-double with 12 points and 10 steals.
Seniors Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards added 14 points each to help the first-place Wolves remain undefeated in the Super Conference North and move to 15-1 overall. Highland remains winless in league action and falls to 2-15 in total.
