Friday night, Sigourney-Keota’s Reanah Utterback completed her climb to the top of the podium at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Wrestling Championships at Xtream Arena in Coralville. The SK junior won her second career state championship, beating Silvia Garcia Vasquez of West Liberty by fall in the 115lb finals. She spoke with KCII Sports about her keys to the win on the mat and what it feels like to bring home the title. Utterback said, “I got to my shots right off the whistle, from there I just found my turn. After the win, it’s great to go up and see my family. This is a great accomplishment for me. Being out there, having my hand raised, knowing that I’m doing what I love!”
Utterback went 5-0 in her week at State, pinning her way to the championship in an average of just under two minutes per bout. She finishes the regular season undefeated with a 49-0 record, with all of her wins coming with bonus points, including 44 pins and five tech falls. The junior was ranked No. 1 wire-to-wire at 115lbs and is a finalist for the Dan Gable Ms. Wrestler of the Year Award. Utterback was also a girls state champion as a freshman in 2022.
