seisc-shootout

Both the WACO and WMU boys basketball teams were bested Saturday night in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout.

In a pair of games heard on the KCII3 Stream, WACO fell first to Holy Trinity Catholic 54-53. A game that saw half a dozen lead changes, it was the Warriors up front at the half 25-23. Chase Waterhouse helped fuel the first two quarters with nine of his 11 points. WACO doubled that lead heading into the fourth quarter, thanks to a team-high 16 from Colton Leichty. Five quick fouls in the fourth quarter got the Crusaders to the line where they went six for six. Senior Conner Gehling took over with 10 of his 24 in the frame, plus the game-winning bucket with three seconds left to play. The Warriors wrap up the regular season tomorrow in Pekin.

Defense was the key in game two between Winfield-Mt. Union and West Burlington. Two teams averaging more than 60 points per game were held well below that mark as West Burlington prevailed 45-38. A tough shooting night for the Wolves saw them go just 3-22 from deep and 3-10 from the line. Held to single digits in each of the first three quarters, the Wolves had intentions of a late comeback as Cam Buffington scored half of his 12 points in the fourth. West Burlington always seemed to have the answer, however, usually in the form of Mason Watkins. The Falcon junior went a perfect 6-6 at the line to ice the game and keep West Burlington’s perfect record intact. The Wolves look to bounce back in their regular season finale on Tuesday at Lone Tree.
